Moana Digital Health and ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital: a partnership for digital health in Morobe

Moana Digital Health has commenced a partnership with ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital in Lae, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea.
The objective is to advance digital health at ANGAU and to strengthen patient care, service delivery, clinical governance and health information management.
A hospital that serves a region
ANGAU is a Level 5 facility and the second largest hospital in Papua New Guinea. It is the district hospital for Lae, the provincial hospital for Morobe, and the regional referral hospital for the Momase region.
The Momase region covers about 2.8 million people across Morobe, Madang, East Sepik and Sandaun, with further referrals from the Highlands.
A hospital with that reach needs a record that holds up across every department and every handover. That is the work this partnership sets out to do.
How the work began
Engagement began with the Officers in Charge of departments across the hospital, followed by sessions with the remaining departments and the nursing teams. Structured departmental work began with the Medical Records team and has proceeded department by department since.
Each department’s workflow is mapped with the people who carry it out and configured in Moana with them, before anything goes into use.
The approach is deliberate. Each department’s workflow is mapped with the people who carry it out and configured in Moana with them, before anything goes into use. Data mapping and configuration are now complete.
Aligned to national governance
The work is aligned to Papua New Guinea’s National Digital Health Strategy 2025 to 2030 and proceeds through the established governance pathways of the Morobe Provincial Health Authority and the National Department of Health.
Moana is built on open standards, including HL7 FHIR R4, HL7 v2, ICD 10 and LOINC, so that the hospital’s data can be exchanged with national systems through named standards rather than custom connections.
ANGAU owns its data. Moana maintains the system and provides support on site and remotely.
What comes next
The next phase is the rollout and staff training on site, with the Moana team working alongside the hospital’s ICT team.
The hospital has also asked about bringing its existing paper records into the system, either by import from spreadsheets or by scanning with a final human check before anything enters the record.
