Organisation profile

The regional referral hospital for the Momase Region.

ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital in Lae is a Level 5 facility. It is the district hospital for Lae, the provincial hospital for Morobe Province and the regional referral hospital for the Momase Region, which covers Morobe, Madang, East Sepik and Sandaun and a catchment of about 2.8 million people.

Moana Digital Health works with the hospital in partnership with the Morobe Provincial Health Authority (MoPHA). Every department at ANGAU has been mapped with its Officer in Charge and team and is now configured in Moana, with go live expected in the coming weeks. The full engagement is described in the ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital case study.

The Blood Transfusion Service

The Blood Transfusion Service, the hospital’s Blood Bank Unit, carries out donor screening, grouping, infection testing, cross matching and issue. It reports every unit collected, transfused or discarded each month.

The challenge

Every unit accounted for, in both directions.

Transfusion safety depends on knowing, for every unit, who donated it, how it was tested and matched, and who received it. If a concern arises about a donor or a unit, the service must be able to find every recipient affected.

The service also reports each month on every unit collected, transfused or discarded. The requirement was one record that links donor, unit and recipient and produces that report from the same data.

The approach

The transfusion chain mapped with the Blood Bank Unit.

The service’s workflow was mapped with its staff from donor screening through grouping, infection testing and cross matching to issue, and configured in Moana with them.

The department note on the Blood Transfusion Service at ANGAU describes the workflow in more detail.

Scope configured

From collection to transfusion on one record.

The service is configured for:

  • Donor screening and grouping
  • Infection testing
  • Cross matching and issue
  • Donor, unit and recipient linked from collection to transfusion
  • Tracing of any unit back to its donor and forward to its recipient
  • Monthly reporting of every unit collected, transfused or discarded, drawn from the same data

Because donor, unit and recipient are linked in the record, a question about any unit can be answered in both directions without searching separate registers.

Monthly reporting is drawn from the data recorded in the course of the service’s work, so the report and the record agree.

Governance and standards

Governance, standards and data ownership.

The work is aligned to Papua New Guinea’s National Digital Health Strategy 2025 to 2030 and proceeds through the governance pathways of the Morobe Provincial Health Authority.

The hospital’s data is exchanged with national systems through named standards, including HL7 FHIR R4. Health data remains under the control of ANGAU and MoPHA. Moana Digital Health maintains the system and provides support on site and remotely.
